This is Sam Taylor-Wood's Still Life (2001). The video shows a classically arranged bowl of fruit decaying next to a ballpoint pen. I thought this video was interesting because decay is fascinating, and also the juxtaposition of the dying fruit next to the plastic, unmoving pen illustrates the frailty of humanity and that the world goes on without us after we are gone.

  1. This is really fascinating and must have taken forever to film. I like the idea of this as well.

  2. The juxtaposition of the decaying fruit with the pen is really interesting. I almost feel like the pen might represent modern times while the decaying fruit is the past.

  4. To mimi's comment I can see that very much, with her comment in mind, it made me get the feeling that no matter who is dying around us, the rest of the world must and will go on. I really like the visual effects for this. Obviously, fruit doesn't decay in muntes. So the fact that the artist captured the decay and sped up the video for us to see is impressive.
